51ÂÜÀò to award nearly 650 degrees at Fall Commencement on Saturday

At 10 a.m., on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Fant-Ewing Coliseum, 51ÂÜÀò President Dr. Nick J. Bruno will award 647 degrees at 51ÂÜÀò’s Fall 2013 Commencement Ceremony.

Graduates from the 2013 summer class will also receive their degrees.

There will be 468 degrees conferred to fall graduates, and 179 degrees conferred to summer graduates.

During this commencement, a unique event will take place—honorary doctorates will be awarded to long-time 51ÂÜÀò supporters, George Luffey and John McCarter.

Luffey served as a member of the Board of Regents for 18 years and also served 51ÂÜÀò as a member of its faculty, and coach for its football and baseball teams.

Luffey led the 51ÂÜÀò baseball team to its first championship in 1964 during his tenure as head coach, was president of 51ÂÜÀò’s Booster Club, was voted into the 51ÂÜÀò Hall of Fame, and received the George T. Walker Lifetime Achievement Award.

McCarter, a Louisiana State University Graduate and decorated World War II veteran, is a renowned geologist who taught at both Louisiana Tech University and 51ÂÜÀò.

McCarter was the founder and head of 51ÂÜÀò’s geology department and holds Emeritus status with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

There are two top graduates within the summer and fall classes.

Top summer graduate 2013:
Jeffrey Alderman is receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. He is from West Monroe, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Alderman.

Top fall graduate 2013:
Victoria Smith is receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art.Ìý She is from San Francisco, Calif., and is the daughter of Maria Smith.

Several honor graduates will be recognized during the ceremonies. They are designated as summa cum laude (3.900-4.000), magna cum laude (3.750-3.899) and cum laude (3.500-3.749).
